The Nigeria Police Force have declared British national Andrew Wynne, also known as Andrew Povich, and Nigerian citizen Lucky Obiyan wanted for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nigeria.
The police made the announcement on Monday, accusing Wynne of building a network of sleeper cells aimed at destabilizing the country.
During a press briefing in Abuja, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi revealed that Wynne rented space at Labour House in Abuja and set up a school as a cover for his activities.
Adejobi explained that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, had uncovered a plot involving foreign mercenaries and Nigerian collaborators, with nine suspects already apprehended.
“The Nigeria Police Force has launched a comprehensive investigation into the activities of foreign nationals and subversive elements attempting to undermine the government through unconstitutional regime change,” Adejobi said.
He further disclosed that Wynne had provided substantial financial backing to orchestrate violent protests, spread misinformation, and carry out other unlawful activities to create chaos and justify an illegal coup. Wynne is said to have issued directives, provided financial resources, and monitored the progress of the operation.
“Andrew Wynne mobilized billions of naira to his Nigerian collaborators, instructing them to incite public uprisings and storm police stations and military barracks, hoping for a violent confrontation that would attract international condemnation of the Nigerian government,” Adejobi added.
Wynne and his associate, Lucky Obiyan, have since fled the country, and the police have declared them wanted. Adejobi said a global manhunt is currently underway.
