National grid may keep collapsing until repairs are completed -TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Thursday lamented the instability in the national grid, saying that the system may continue to experience a collapse until all the repairs are fully carried out.

The national grid collapsed again on Thursday, making it the 10th time in 2024.

In a statement issued by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the TCN said the grid witnessed another collapse at 11.29 am on Thursday, caused by a sudden rise in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz.

Explaining that the frequency surge was triggered by a fault in one of the substations, Mbah said it was then shut down to prevent further complications.

“Recovery efforts began immediately, and the Abuja Axis was restored within 28 minutes. Recovery is still ongoing,” the statement reads, noting that the TCN is actively engaged in significant repairs on several critical transmission lines and substations.

The facilities, according to Mbah, include the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro-Mando axis, major upgrades at the Jebba transmission substation, and the restoration of the second Ugwuaji-Apir 330kV transmission line.

“These efforts include both technical upgrades and strategic interventions based on the committee’s recommendations.

“However, it is important to note that while these repairs and improvements are underway, some degree of instability in the system is likely to persist until all major works are completed”.

Mbah also appealed for patience and understanding during the challenging period.

She reaffirmed the TCN’s commitment to improving the reliability of electricity supply, while acknowledging the crucial role that stable power has in supporting Nigeria’s socio-economic growth.

The TCN also assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to secure the grid’s long-term stability, following the investigative committee’s recommendations.

Earlier, the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company had reported a power outage at 11:30 am, informing its customers of the ugly development.

The message read: “Dear Esteemed Customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 7 November 2024, at 11:29 hrs, affecting supply within our network.
“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us,” IKEDC said.
