The newly-appointed Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Justice Bola Okikiolu Ighile, and other members of the electoral Commission, including Samson Ajibade, Oluwo Akim Durojaiye, Metilelu Olumide Olusola, Aileru Abeeb Dapo, and Oladele Adekanye, have been advised to prioritize transparency, fairness, and impartiality in the discharge of their duties.
Sanwo-Olu gave the charge during the swearing-in ceremony for LASIEC officials at the Lagos House, Ikeja, on Friday.
Saying that the credibility of any electoral process is the cornerstone of its acceptance, Sanwo-Olu charged the appointees: “Your actions must reflect the highest standards of integrity and accountability.”
While congratulating Ighile and other LASIEC members, the governor noted that there are high expectations that they will bring their professional knowledge, expertise, and wealth of experience to bear on the state administration’s commitment to upholding the integrity and credibility of the electoral process in Lagos.
The governor added: “Your selection is a testament to your integrity, expertise, and unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy and good governance.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who encouraged them to leverage technology to enhance efficiency and reliability, said: “For example, exploring biometric voter registration can significantly enhance accuracy and prevent fraud, while online platforms can improve voter education and access to information.”
He tasked LASIEC on the importance of fostering robust collaboration, saying: “LASIEC must work in synergy with all stakeholders. This means establishing regular consultations with political parties to proactively address concerns, partnering with civil society organizations for effective voter education campaigns, and maintaining open communication channels with the media to ensure transparency throughout the process.”
He tasked them to safeguard and strengthen the state electoral processes.
“The people and government of Lagos State trust in your ability to uphold the sanctity of our electoral system, and I am confident you will discharge your duties with utmost dedication and professionalism.
“LASIEC stands as a pillar of our democratic framework, entrusted with the noble duty of organizing free, fair, and credible local government elections.”
He assured that the administration is committed to providing the necessary support and resources to overcome election hurdles, adding: “To the people of Lagos State, I reiterate this administration’s unwavering commitment to democracy, accountability, and the rule of law. Credible elections are the bedrock of sustainable development, and we will continue to support LASIEC in fulfilling its mandate.”
